John Renbourn turns in an album of guitar instrumentals (with a few other instruments added here and there) in The Nine Maidens. The dominant piece is the minute title track, a three-movement original that allows Renbourn the space to work out interesting chord patterns along with fingerpicking and harmonics, beginning with the slow "Clarsach" passage before picking up speed with "The Nine .

The album form John Renbourn is The Nine Maidens. This is a stunningly brilliant album. It is deeply rooted in the music and love of south west Britian. It even features the ceremonial Padstow Obby Horse drum. But the album also features elements of celtic folk, baroque and classical as well as hints of jazz blues/5(18).
